Love Your Community Winners

We’ve celebrated our community with four previous rounds of  “Love Your Community” mini-grants. It’s been fun and they’ve produced terrific winners like the Muskegon Street Performers, Roll on Muskegon community bike rides, the MI Muskegon photography project, Movies on the Beach at Pere Marquette and so many more.

This year, we invited anyone who loves our community to apply for mini-grant funding with a special, new focus – creating a more inclusive community. And we invited our community to VOTE (“likes” on Facebook). When the votes were tallied, we awarded five (5) grants to projects that are welcoming, inclusive, create new opportunities for people to come together, make new friends, learn new things, or celebrate the rich diversity of our community.

Here are the 2017 winners:

EMBRACE BOOKS – is a free bookstore! They give books away without any strings attached – getting books into the hands of people who want them and opening the doors to adventure, learning, and inspiration. By giving away books for free, they are helping make literacy accessible to all.

FRIDAY FAMILY FUN NIGHTS – Bringing families together to enjoy free, fun activities at the Lakeshore Museum Center is the perfect way to get to meet new people! This mini-grant will allow the museum to bring in special presenters, create unique hands-on experiences and make Family Fun Nights accessible for everyone!

MCGROWS CHILDREN’S CORNER – a program of McLaughlin Grows, fosters community-building by bringing together children, families, and volunteers from across the neighborhood to share projects, stories, and cultures establishing the feeling of community while growing together!

KIDS COOKING @ KITCHEN 242 – Healthy kids need to know how to cook healthy food. Kitchen 242 will be offering fun, exciting (and tasty) classes for youth in downtown Muskegon. Kids can learn where their food comes from, as well as lifelong habits that can help build a healthier community.

BIG RED HEART 5K & HEALTH FAIR – Big Reds invite the entire community to support the school by joining the 5K run and health fair on June 17.  Kids 18 and under can participate FREE! Lots of community resources, medical professionals and fun activities at the event.
